Moisture accumulation in gun safes is a common issue that many firearm owners overlook. The primary causes of moisture in gun safes are environmental factors, such as humidity and temperature fluctuations. Most of the U.S. population lives in areas where average humidity levels exceed 50%, creating a conducive environment for moisture to seep into gun safes. When moisture enters a safe, it can lead to rust, corrosion, and damage to firearms and ammunition.
To protect your firearms, it’s crucial to understand where this moisture comes from and how to prevent it. Airborne moisture, condensation, and even the breathability of materials used in safes contribute to humidity levels inside a gun safe. This moisture can cause irreversible damage to your valuable firearms without proper control.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) recommends maintaining the humidity level inside a gun safe between 30% and 50%, with a temperature range of 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Maintaining this range is critical to prevent rust on metal components and mold growth on other materials.
Exceeding these levels can lead to severe consequences. For instance, when the temperature in your safe rises above 86°F and humidity levels surpass 70%, metal components can start to corrode within just four days. This rapid deterioration underscores the importance of regular humidity checks and control measures.
Humidity control is not just about preventing rust; it’s also about preserving the overall integrity of your firearms. Excessive moisture can cause wooden gun stocks to warp, adhesives to break down, and even create an environment where ammunition becomes less reliable over time. Proper humidity control ensures that your firearms remain in top condition and ready for use when needed.
Investing in a high-quality dehumidifier is one of the most effective ways to maintain the ideal humidity range in your gun safe. These devices actively remove moisture from the air, keeping it dry and safe for firearm storage.
Electric dehumidifiers are among the most popular options for gun safes. These devices, like dehumidifier rods and electric dryers, generate a small amount of heat to evaporate moisture and maintain dry air inside the safe. A commonly recommended product is the "Golden Rod," a small plastic tube with a low-temperature heating element that can keep moisture at bay.
These devices are easy to install and provide continuous protection against humidity. They are particularly effective in areas with high ambient humidity or in frequently opened safes, exposing the contents to moisture-laden air.
Desiccant devices like silica gel packets are practical alternatives for those who prefer non-electric options. Silica gel absorbs moisture from the air, making it cost-effective and maintenance-free. These packets are particularly useful in smaller safes or as a supplementary measure alongside an electric dehumidifier.
However, replacing or recharging these packets regularly is essential to ensure continued effectiveness. Over time, silica gel becomes saturated with moisture and loses its absorptive capacity, requiring regeneration through heating or replacement.
In addition to using dehumidifiers, several practical methods can help keep your gun safe and dry:
Maintaining optimal humidity levels in your gun safe is an ongoing process. Regular maintenance should be done, such as replacing desiccant packs and ensuring your electric dehumidifier is functioning correctly, are crucial. Additionally, consider adjusting your moisture control strategies seasonally to account for changes in ambient humidity.

I love them they make my safe room look so organized and perfectly displayed.
Great product fit my Winchester SPX perfectly very satisfied with my purchase
Purchased several mounts at this point and have yet to be disappointed. Always on point and always top notch.
Exactly what I was looking for to float my favorite rifle on the wall. Simple but thoughtful design. Now I just need a 1911 to match.
Quick and easy to mount. I was looking for a behind-the-door mount for quick access to my 10-22. I have varmints and chicken killer dogs roaming on my property so I wanting to grab my gun in seconds. This mount system fit the bill at a reasonable price point.

Bought the 870 mount for a home defense access point. Works great!
mounted to dead space on inside safe door. great for unused space.
These are great brackets but they are a little snug. I have other models from the seller and they are not as snug. I have used these for MY staccato mags and my Prodigy mags. It fits both mag brands the same (snug). All in all they are great, they come with mounting screws and anchors. Shipping was fast.
I like my shotgun mount alot, very easy to install and easy to release the gun from mount. I have it mounted vertically and it depends on the strength of the spring to hold it in the locked position on the mount and it worries me a little that if you bumped in to it, it could come off of the mount but maybe not. Overall I like it and would get one for my other guns.
Exactly as anticipated! Fits great! Have not mounted to wall yet. Fitment is key!
