This is a good mount and provides easy access. I used 3" vertical spacing and it worked well.

I didn't think the mount was going to actually hold the weight of my AR, but it holds it tight, but I can still pull it right out if I need to access it quickly.

So it seems that the mount works better barrel down as opposed to barrel up.
